A life in pause mode

When I first started microdosing five years ago, I was at a crossroads. For years I had taken antidepressants, neatly prescribed by my GP. The world became flat because of it. Less depth, less lows, but also less peaks. It made me more "stable" on paper, but deep inside I felt lost. When I was introduced to magic truffles, a world opened up for me.

Artificial balance versus natural depth

Antidepressants are designed to affect chemical processes in the brain. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) allow serotonin to remain available in the brain for longer. Sounds logical, but the effect felt artificial. Like I was living on a constant pause mode. No real connection, no creativity, no growth.

Truffles are different. They are a natural product, rich in psilocybin as well as countless other active substances that together cause the so-called entourage effect. Microdosing with truffles did not give me a new personality, but helped me slowly return to who I really was. My emotional life returned, subtly but clearly. As if the fog lifted.

A gradual transition

Switching from antidepressants to truffles was not a rigorous decision, but a gradual transition. With guidance and knowledge, I started microdosing carefully. Where antidepressants sedated me, truffles actually put me in touch with my emotions. Not overwhelming, but clear and manageable.

On days I microdosed, I felt more creative, more connected to my surroundings and better able to live through difficult feelings instead of repressing them. My relationships became more intimate, my work became more meaningful and I started dreaming again, literally and figuratively.

What does science say

More and more studies show that psilocybin, in combination with the other compounds in truffles, can be more effective for depression than traditional antidepressants. The difference is not just in the molecule, but in the context and experience. Truffles work not only on a neurochemical level, but also on an existential level. Users report insights, meaning and a renewed sense of connection. Antidepressants rarely do.

In addition, truffles have no physical dependence, whereas quitting SSRIs is often accompanied by severe withdrawal symptoms. Truffles require conscious use, not daily intake. That alone makes their use fundamentally different.

What I choose today

Today, I no longer use antidepressants. Truffles did not "fix" my life, but they helped me understand myself anew. They acted as a gentle guide, not a chemical crutch. And while I would never advise anyone to stop taking medication without consultation, I begrudge everyone the knowledge and experience of what truffles can do.

If you are considering stopping antidepressants, always discuss this with your GP first and involve a loved one in your process. Never stop on your own. Microdosing with truffles can be a valuable addition for some, but requires conscious choices and good guidance.
